Kamala Harris’ ‘Drag Race’ cameo gets mixed reviews: ‘it may have broken the line’

Presidential candidate Kamala Harris became the first sitting vice president to enter the workroom this week after she shared an exit message on “RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars,” leading to a mix of cheers and jeers online.

“Every day, we’re seeing our rights and freedoms under attack, including everyone’s right to be who they are, to love who they want, openly and proudly,” Harris, 59, said. clip that was teased on Thursday but is expected to air on top of the season 9 finale on Friday.

“So as we fight back against these attacks, let’s all remember, no one is alone,” continued Harris, joined by RuPaul regulars Michelle Visage and Jamal Sims, *NSYNC singer Lance Bass, the “Ghostbusters” actress Leslie Jones and “American Horror Story.” Actor Cheyenne Jackson — all LGBQT+ icons.

Jones then says seriously, “You should vote!” before the six-piece burst into dance – and Harris bursts into her infamous laugh.

The minute-long clip drew mixed opinions across social media, with some praising Harris’ historic appearance — which was filmed long before her candidacy was announced and aired coincidentally days after President Biden’s endorsement.

“She knows her audience,” wrote one X user.

“That’s herster,” said another.

“I just know this is going to piss off a lot of people … and I’m here for it,” declared a third.

However, there were many social media users who condemned Harris’ message.

“This might have broken the vibration meter … Wow,” wrote one disappointed X user.

“I’m not saying give blind allegiance to the Republicans, but I hope my fellow black people get a good look at who she’s aligning herself with. She doesn’t come to save you”, wrote another.

While she is the first sitting vice president — and presidential candidate — to appear in the workroom, the backstage area where contestants transform into drag queens for their stage performances, Harris’ visit doesn’t mark the first time a political figure has made a kao in the show.

Then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi made two appearances on the show in 2018 and 2022, making a similar pitch to Harris: “It’s very important for people to make their voice and vote heard.”

The clip comes just four days after Harris announced he would seek the Democratic nomination after Biden said he would withdraw from the race and endorsed him.
